Check canning lids and bands for proper functioning.
Wash lids and bands with warm, soapy water prior to canning.
Handwash bands for future use and dry thoroughly to prevent rusting.
When canning, it is crucial to use NEW lids each time because undersides of the lids have a special softened sealing compound that is made to mold and seal to the jar. Once opened, it cannot reliably re-seal safely again onto another jar because it has already been molded to the previous jar.
The underside of lids should not have scratches, or uneven or incomplete sealing compound as this may prevent sealing.
